CREST Vegetable Garden Project

Cole, Finn and Malcolm have been researching how the proposed school vegetable garden should be watered. Their work follows the Year 5 Diving Deeper groups' vegetable garden design project. Mr. Cook guided the CREST team through their research. Mrs. Holt helped them write their report. The research results showed the team that their original ideas for irrigation needed to change.
Next year the CREST team will decide on the most efficient irrigation system and help build the school vegetable garden.

Taonga Homework Project

Week 5 Homework

Here is this week's homework. It includes a project about our school-wide theme of taonga / treasure. The purpose of the project is to create a family history of taonga. Taonga are treasures or precious items, which have been handed down through family generations. The taonga project will be supported in class. Specific skills ( such as criteria and layout) will be taught. Paper for publishing will be provided. The finished project is due on Friday 23.9.11. Please read the next post to find out more about the project. Ask Mrs. Gunson if you have any questions.

Kitchen Chemistry in Room 18

In Term 2 we learnt how change happens through actions and reactions. We investigated this fact by mixing substances together. We used substances, such as vinegar and lemon, that we would usually find in our kitchens at home.
Reactions happened and new substances were made. Did you know that carbon dioxide can be formed by mixing vinegar and baking soda? We found out that some reactions could be reversed and others created permanent change. Special thanks to Mr. Whitehead and Mr. Gunson for helping us with the experiments.

Experiments

During Week 8 in Term 2, I brought my experiment to school. It was a coke and mentos explosion! I put four mentos into the coke bottle and stood well back to watch.
The coke bottle bubbled and exploded so quickly that if you even blinked, you would miss the whole thing. I found out that the highest explosion was 9 metres high! We didn't even get to half of a metre; but it was still fun to watch.
I don't exactly know why it explodes but my theory is that something in the mentos is -well I don't actually know what it's called but I do know that when you stick it in coke it EXPLODES!(Obviously) So if you want to try this make sure that you run away as fast as you can after you've put the mentos in.

Camp Kawau 2011

In the last week of Term 1, Rooms 18 ,17 and 21 went to Camp Bentzon on Kawau Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Camp Bentzon is named after the man, who gave the land for the camp.

We had an awesome time. We went sailing, fishing, kayaking, orienteering, confidence course, bivouac building, and raft building. We had excellent parents helping us on camp. Mr Cook, Mr Hartstone, Mr Stainton, Mr Salmon, Mr Walding, Mr Aukett, Mrs Vent and Mrs Pool, thank you very very much. We had a great time. Thanks for serving breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Thanks also for being fantastic team leaders and activity leaders.

Camp Bentzon on Kawau Island was the best!
